Chapter 8
The Serpent's Coil
Nathan's moral compass shifts. He begins an affair, with his grandmother's full support. She even facilitates his marriage to the woman he's cheating with, benefiting from the mortgage.
The air in my grandmother’s house had always held a certain scent, a mix of mothballs and strong, sweet perfume, a comforting aroma that, for a long time, masked the rot beneath. I remembered those nights, wrapped in borrowed blankets, the hushed conversations of the women a lullaby, their laughter, when it came, a tinkling chime. And the most baffling, the most gut-wrenching part of it all, was that my grandmother not only knew, but she actively encouraged it.
“Your father needs… comfort, child,” she’d said to me once, her voice like honey poured over broken glass, when I’d innocently asked why Daddy was always out late. Her eyes, usually sharp and assessing, held a strange, almost triumphant gleam. “He’s a man, after all. A man needs a woman who understands him.”
