The air in my grandmother’s house always held a certain magic. It was thick with the scent of roasting meat on Sundays, the sweet, comforting aroma of brewing tea on cooler afternoons, and the faint, lingering perfume of her lavender sachets tucked into every dresser drawer. For a child like me, who loved stories and the feeling of being cherished, it was paradise. Nights there blurred into weeks, weeks into months, a tapestry woven with laughter, whispered secrets under the covers, and the comforting weight of a hand stroking my hair. My grandmother’s place was a sanctuary, a haven where the undercurrents of her daughters’ machinations simply didn’t reach me. I’d spend hours nestled in the plush armchairs, listening to her stories, her voice a gentle lullaby. I’d play in the sprawling garden, the scent of roses and honeysuckle intoxicating, convinced that this was where I truly belonged. It was a beautiful, fragile bubble, and I was its unsuspecting inhabitant.
