The air in Granny’s house, once thick with the cloying scent of her rose perfume and the comforting aroma of baking bread, had taken on a different hue. It was a stale, heavy scent now, tinged with the sharp, acrid undertones of cheap liquor and the ever-present undercurrent of unspoken judgments. The warmth I’d once known, the feeling of being cherished within those walls, had long since evaporated, replaced by a chilling awareness that the affection was a carefully constructed facade, a gilded cage built on the foundation of my father’s dwindling finances and Granny’s insatiable greed.

She, who had once showered me with sugary sweets and whispered stories that painted my father as her beloved golden child, now directed her venom towards anyone who dared to deviate from her meticulously crafted narrative. The whispers, once directed at my mother, were now aimed at Ntokozo, laced with the same venom, the same baseless accusations. It was a familiar dance, a performance I had witnessed countless times, albeit with different players. The stage was the same, the script eerily similar, only the actors had changed.
