Grandmother and Leticia, now allied with the second wife, plot to reclaim the inheritance from the first wife, resorting to legal battles and accusations of forgery.

The air in Grandmother’s house, once thick with the cloying scent of her rose potpourri, now carried a different kind of weight. It was the sharp, metallic tang of desperation, a scent I’d come to associate with her and, more recently, with Leticia. The brief, chaotic aftermath of Uncle Amon’s brutal demise had settled into a grim tableau of legal wrangling. The first wife, a woman I barely knew, had emerged, surprisingly, triumphant, securing the lion’s share of the inheritance. It was a turn of events that had clearly not sat well with the two women who now occupied the apex of Grandmother’s affections.

“She thinks she can waltz in and take what is rightfully ours?” Grandmother’s voice, usually a low hum of self-importance, was now a shrill, reedy sound, like a damaged violin string. She sat on her faded velvet armchair, her hands fluttering like trapped moths, her eyes fixed on Leticia, who lounged on the Persian rug, her bare feet propped on a silk cushion.

Leticia, ever the picture of languid entitlement, let out a soft, dismissive laugh. “Honestly, Grandmother, it’s almost laughable. Forging documents? Claiming lobola negotiations we were all privy to? The audacity!” Her tone dripped with a manufactured outrage that did little to mask the calculating glint in her eyes. She was the spitting image of Grandmother’s ambition, a younger, more vibrant echo of her greed.
