The scent of expensive perfume, a heady mix of jasmine and something sharp, like crushed green leaves, still clung to the air in Grandma’s living room. It was a smell that used to make my heart flutter with anticipation, a promise of treats and whispered stories. Now, it just felt heavy, suffocating. Daddy, my father, was a ghost in his own home, a specter haunting the edges of a life that had once been his to command. His retirement, once a beacon of well-deserved rest, had become a slow, agonizing descent, each day chipping away at the man he used to be. And Grandma, the architect of so much of our family’s fractured history, merely watched from her gilded perch, her smile as serene and unreadable as ever.

“He’s been quiet lately,” Grandma said, her voice a soft murmur that barely disturbed the plush velvet of the armchair. She was inspecting her fingernails, painted a defiant shade of crimson, as if the state of her cuticles held more importance than the emptiness in her son’s eyes.

I sat across from her, the worn pages of a book open on my lap, though my gaze was fixed on the dust motes dancing in the slivers of afternoon sun that pierced the heavy drapes. Quiet. Yes, Daddy was quiet. The boisterous laughter, the booming voice that used to fill our house with warmth, had faded. Now, it was replaced by a low hum of resignation, a defeated sigh that seemed to emanate from his very bones.
