The hermit subjects Elias to a series of challenges, testing his strength, wit, and respect for nature. Elias learns valuable lessons about survival and the hidden magic of the forest.
The air in the hermit’s hut was thick with the scent of dried herbs and woodsmoke, a comforting aroma that Elias found himself clinging to. Outside, the wind howled through the ancient trees, a mournful song that echoed the ache in his own heart. He sat by the hearth, nursing a mug of bitter herbal tea, his gaze fixed on the dancing flames. The hermit, Old Man Hemlock, as he called himself, had been unusually quiet since Elias’s arrival, his gruff pronouncements about the Sunstone replaced by long stretches of silence, punctuated only by the crackling fire and the rustling of leaves outside.
“You seek the Sunstone,” Hemlock finally rasped, his voice like stones grinding together. He hadn’t looked up from the intricate knot he was weaving from dried reeds. “Many have. Few have found it. Fewer still have returned.”
Elias’s grip tightened on the mug. “My family… they are fading, sir. I must find it.” His voice was a low plea, laced with the desperation that had driven him from his home.
