A Family Restored
Elias watches, his heart swelling with relief, as his mother and siblings begin to stir, their eyes clearer, their smiles returning. The warmth and hope have returned to their home.
The air in the small cottage, once thick with the cloying scent of sickness and despair, now hummed with a gentle, vibrant energy. Elias sat by the hearth, the dying embers casting a soft glow on his weary but hopeful face. He watched his mother, her breath no longer a shallow rasp but a steady, even rhythm. Her eyelids, which had been sealed shut for days, fluttered, then slowly opened. A faint, almost imperceptible smile touched her lips as her gaze found Elias.
"Elias," she whispered, her voice a fragile thread, but no longer choked with fever.
His heart leaped, a joyous, unburdened thing. He scrambled to her side, taking her frail hand in his. It was cool, but the clammy clamminess was gone. "Mother," he breathed, his voice thick with unshed tears. "You're awake. You're truly awake."
