The splintered wood of the cottage door gave way with a groan, a sound swallowed by the sudden, blinding rush of emerald light. Elias burst through, the Sunstone clutched tight in his palm, its warmth a palpable force against his skin, a beacon against the encroaching gloom that had settled over his home. The air inside was heavy, thick with the scent of wilting herbs and the shallow breaths of the sick. His mother lay on her pallet, her usually vibrant skin now a pale, almost translucent shade, her eyes closed, her breathing a fragile whisper. His younger siblings were huddled close, their small bodies still and their faces etched with a weariness far too deep for their years.

For a moment, Elias stood frozen, the vibrant energy of the Sunstone a stark contrast to the somber stillness of the room. The forest, with all its trials and its magic, felt a world away. Here, the reality of his family’s suffering pressed in, a physical ache in his chest. He had faced down a mischievous sprite, navigated treacherous paths, and learned ancient wisdom, but this, this quiet vulnerability, felt like the true test.

“Mother?” His voice, rough from the journey and thick with emotion, was barely a sound.
