Chapter 15
Overcoming the Trickster
Elias, remembering the hermit's words and his own resolve, sees through the sprite's illusion. He bypasses the trick with cleverness, his focus solely on reaching his family.
Elias’s breath hitched, a ragged sound in the sudden, suffocating silence. Before him, where the path had been, now shimmered a wall of pure, blinding light. It pulsed with an inner fire, a mirror to the Sunstone he sought, yet it blocked his way as surely as any stone. He could feel its heat, a dry, prickling sensation on his skin, and the air around it hummed with an unseen energy. This was the sprite’s doing, he knew it. A final, dazzling trick to send him stumbling back into the shadows.
He recalled the hermit’s gruff pronouncement: “The woods will show you what you need to see, Elias. But it is *you* who must choose what to believe.” And his own whispered vow, spoken in the dim light of his sickroom, the image of his mother’s pale face etched into his mind: *I will not fail them.* The sprite’s illusions were potent, certainly, capable of weaving dreams and nightmares with equal ease. But Elias carried a heavier truth within him, a truth forged in the quiet strength of his family’s love and the desperate need that drove him.
He closed his eyes, not in defeat, but in concentration. He pictured the worn, familiar path, the moss-covered stones, the gnarled roots that had tripped him more than once. He felt the cool, damp earth beneath his worn boots, heard the distant, melodic chirping of unseen birds. He anchored himself to these simple realities, to the tangible world that existed beyond the sprite’s ephemeral magic. When he opened his eyes again, the light was still there, still a formidable barrier, but it no longer held the same power over him. He saw it now for what it was: a shimmering curtain, a theatrical display designed to disorient.
