Chapter 70
Chapter 70: The Shadow That Waits
Elias, Anya, and Lena wake in the hollow of the tree to find the shadow from the new star still waiting by the arch. They follow its path, discovering a hidden door woven from moonlight and memory. Stepping through, they enter a silent realm of frozen moments, where a single tear floats in the air. The shadow guides them to touch it, and they experience Kaelen's last memory—a choice he never made. The chapter ends with the tear dissolving into light, leaving a new question in their hearts, and the shadow becoming a gentle breeze that leads them onward.
The first thing Elias felt was warmth. Not the heat of sun or fire, but the deep, bone-level warmth of two bodies pressed against him, their breaths slow and even. The tree's roots cradled them, and the air smelled of damp earth and something sweet, like honeyed blossoms. He blinked, the world coming into focus slowly. The sky above was pale lavender, the sun a steady golden coin near the horizon. And there, still, was the star. Smaller now, silver, pulsing in a rhythm that felt like a question asked and waiting.
Lena stirred first, her hand tightening on his chest. She didn't open her eyes, just murmured, "Is it still there?"
"Yes," Elias said.
