The master's hand descends through the crack in the sky, threatening the garden. The hand kept coming.
It wasn't fast. It was deliberate, like a tide that knew it had all the time in the world. Each finger was a galaxy compressed into bone, each knuckle a dying star. The crack in the sky bled silver light, and the hand pushed through, palm open, reaching for them.
Lena threw up her shield without thinking. The golden barrier flared, but the hand didn't stop. It pressed against the light, and the shield buckled, sending cracks spiderwebbing across its surface.
