Barnaby's extensive collection of vintage teapots becomes a focus. Zorp believes a component within one of Barnaby's older, unique pieces might be key to repairing his ship.
Barnaby’s gaze drifted from the bubbling samovar to the dusty shelves lining the back of his shop. Each ceramic curve, each polished silver spout, was a silent sentinel of tea-past, a testament to his peculiar passion. He’d acquired them over decades, a motley crew of teapots sourced from forgotten space stations, abandoned colonies, and the occasional delightfully disreputable market. There were squat, robust pots from Mars, built for a planet with a thicker atmosphere, and elegant, impossibly thin ones from Cygnus X-1, designed to pour liquid starlight. He’d always loved them, these vessels of comfort and conversation, but today, they felt less like cherished heirlooms and more like… potential spare parts.
Zorp, perched precariously on a wobbly stool, was peering intently at a chipped porcelain teapot shaped like a rather startled-looking badger. Its handle was a little askew, and the lid had a faint crack running through it. Barnaby had found it on a salvage run to the Kepler-186f system, a place known for its surprisingly resilient but aesthetically questionable fauna.
“This… ‘badger’ vessel,” Zorp began, their voice a melodious hum that still sent a faint tremor down Barnaby’s spine, “its internal resonant frequency is… most intriguing. It suggests a peculiar crystalline structure within its glaze.”
