Chapter 16
K'tharr's Curious Playlist
Officer K'tharr, back on patrol, secretly listens to Earth music. They recall the odd tea shop and Barnaby's peculiar demeanor, filing it away with a hint of curiosity.
Officer K’tharr’s patrol route was as predictable as a binary star system’s orbit. Yet, on this particular cycle, a deviation, however slight, felt… necessary. The hum of the patrol cruiser, usually a monotonous drone designed for maximum efficiency and minimal distraction, was instead overlaid with a peculiar rhythm. K’tharr, a being of pure logic and unwavering adherence to galactic law, found themselves increasingly captivated by the sonic anomalies emanating from a terrestrial planet designated ‘Earth’. Specifically, a genre known as ‘blues’. The melancholic wail of a harmonica, the soulful groan of a guitar – it was illogical, inefficient, and utterly compelling.
The cruiser skimmed the upper atmosphere of a particularly unremarkable planet, a speck of dust in the grand cosmic tapestry. K’tharr’s optical sensors, usually scanning for anomalies, energy signatures, or fleeing fugitives, were instead focused on a small, unassuming structure nestled amidst rolling, green hills. ‘The Galactic Brew,’ the sign read, a quaint, almost embarrassingly earnest declaration. K’tharr’s processors whirred, accessing recent patrol logs. The designation ‘Barnaby’ surfaced, accompanied by a series of low-priority, yet oddly persistent, sensory inputs. An unusual energy signature, a peculiar scent profile that defied standard classification, and a brief, inexplicable levitation of ceramic vessels.
“Log entry, cycle 743.8. Patrol route deviation: minor planetary scan. Origin: unexpected auditory stimulus. Current objective: investigation of anomalous sensory data from designated sector 7G-epsilon. Location: ‘The Galactic Brew’ tea establishment, planet designation E-42, commonly known as Earth.” K’tharr’s voice, a synthesized monotone, echoed in the sterile cockpit. But beneath the robotic delivery, a flicker of something akin to wistful curiosity pulsed.
