Chapter 12
A Close Call and a Fond Farewell
Just as K'tharr grows suspicious, Zorp's ship powers up. Zorp bids a polite farewell, leaving Barnaby with a substantial, unexpected tip and a sense of wonder.
Officer K’tharr’s metallic voice, a sound that Barnaby usually associated with malfunctioning toasters, echoed through the now unnervingly silent tea shop. “Your energy readings have been… erratic, Mr. Barnaby. Most irregular for a establishment of such… quaint dimensions.” K’tharr, a hulking, obsidian figure with glowing crimson optics, paced the worn floorboards, his heavy boots making the teacups on the shelves rattle precariously. Barnaby, perched on a stool behind the counter, felt a bead of sweat trickle down his temple, narrowly missing a stray crumb from Bartholomew, the sentient biscuit dispenser, who was currently emitting a low, disgruntled hum.
“Erratic? Oh, you know how it is, Officer,” Barnaby stammered, his voice a reedy whisper. “Old plumbing. Sometimes the kettle… it gets a bit temperamental. Likes to hum at odd frequencies, you see.” He gestured vaguely towards the back room, where Zorp, in a flurry of panicked alien gestures, was frantically trying to coax his spaceship’s propulsion system back to life. The ship, disguised rather unconvincingly as a particularly lumpy garden shed, sat precariously balanced on Barnaby’s prize-winning petunias just outside.
Zorp, bless his multi-limbed, vaguely iridescent heart, had been a whirlwind of well-intentioned chaos since his arrival. His diplomatic mission to sample Earth’s finest teas had been rudely interrupted by a catastrophic engine failure, forcing him to land his rather advanced vessel in Barnaby’s less-than-ideal tea garden. Barnaby, a man whose greatest adventure until that morning had been choosing between Darjeeling and Assam, found himself embroiled in a clandestine operation to repair an alien spacecraft with the help of a grumpy biscuit dispenser and a diplomat who communicated primarily through a series of polite clicks and whistles.
