Chapter 9
The Hypo-Allergenic Bloom
Elara describes the unique flower: it glows faintly and has a sweet, non-allergenic scent. Barnaby feels a surge of determination; he must find this flower.
Elder Bee Elara’s voice, usually a gentle hum like the rustling of dry leaves, took on a new, urgent resonance. She spoke of a bloom unlike any other, a whispered legend among the oldest of the hive, a flower that defied the very essence of bee-kind’s sustenance. “It is called the Lumina Nectar, young Barnaby,” she rasped, her ancient wings trembling slightly. “A flower that glows, a soft, ethereal light that guides it through the deepest shadows of the Whispering Woods. Its scent, oh, its scent is a symphony of sweetness, yet it holds no trace of pollen. It is a paradox, a miracle.”
Barnaby’s antennae twitched, a jolt of something akin to hope, a sensation he hadn’t felt since before the Great Pollen Pox incident. He leaned closer, his fuzzy chest puffing out with an eagerness that surprised even himself. “No pollen? Are you sure, Elder Elara?” he buzzed, his voice a little too loud, a little too excited. He could already picture it, a beacon of sweet relief in a world that seemed determined to make him sneeze himself into oblivion.
Elara nodded, her wise eyes, clouded with age, fixing on him with an intensity that made him feel seen, truly seen, for the first time. “As sure as the sun rises and sets, Barnaby. It is said to grow only where the earth weeps tears of dew, where the moonlight kisses the mossiest stones. And its nectar… ah, its nectar is said to be the purest, most potent sweetness the hive has ever known. It could replenish our stores, Barnaby. It could save us.”
