Barnaby, feeling the weight of the hive’s dwindling nectar supply pressing down on his antennae like a particularly stubborn dewdrop, decided it was time to consult the oracle. Not a crystal ball kind of oracle, mind you, but the next best thing: Elder Bee Elara. Elara wasn’t just old; she was ancient. Her wings had seen more sunrises than Barnaby had seen pollen grains (which, admittedly, was a very small number). Her hum was a low, resonant thrum, like the earth sighing contentedly, and her eyes, a deep, wise amber, held the secrets of a thousand blooming seasons.

He found her in her usual spot, a quiet alcove near the hive’s deepest stores, meticulously polishing a collection of iridescent beetle wings. The air around her was thick with the scent of dried herbs and the faint, comforting aroma of age.

“Elder Elara?” Barnaby’s voice, usually prone to an explosive hiccup-sneeze, was surprisingly steady. He’d been practicing his vocal control, imagining each word as a tiny, well-behaved ladybug.
