Chapter 6
A Whispered Secret
Barnaby overhears Elder Bee Elara talking about rare flowers. He senses a glimmer of hope, a chance to prove he's more than just a sneezing nuisance to the hive.
Barnaby, usually a whirlwind of flustered wings and apologetic buzzes, found himself motionless, a rare occurrence. He was tucked away in a shadowed alcove near the Elder Bee’s private chamber, a place he usually avoided for fear of accidentally knocking over a priceless jar of preserved dewdrop or, worse, triggering a pollen-induced sneeze that would echo through the hallowed halls. Today, however, a desperate curiosity had driven him here. He’d been hovering near the entrance, contemplating a strategic retreat, when he’d heard the low, melodic hum of Elder Bee Elara’s voice.
She was speaking with a younger, unidentified bee, her words a gentle murmur, barely audible above the distant drone of the hive. Barnaby strained his antennae, his little bee heart thrumming with a mix of apprehension and a fledgling spark of hope. He’d grown accustomed to the whispers, the titters, the outright scoffs that followed him. “The Funny Bee,” they called him, a title delivered with varying degrees of amusement and disdain. He’d even, in his more honest moments, admitted to himself that sometimes, just sometimes, the sheer absurdity of his pollen-fueled explosions brought a peculiar thrill. But the sting of Bartholomew’s taunts, the worried frowns of Queen Beatrice, the general air of exasperation that seemed to cling to him like a stubborn dust mote – that was a weight he was beginning to find unbearable.
“...a peculiar bloom,” Elder Bee Elara was saying, her voice laced with a hint of ancient knowledge, “found only in the Whispering Peaks. Its petals shimmer with an iridescent hue, unlike any other. And its nectar… ah, its nectar is pure, untainted by the usual irritants.”
