The Queen's Decree

Queen Beatrice, exasperated by Barnaby's antics, assigns him a menial task: cleaning the royal honeycomb. She hopes this will keep him out of trouble, but it rarely works.

The hum of the hive, usually a comforting lullaby of industry and purpose, had taken on a distinctly frazzled edge. Queen Beatrice, perched regally on her glistening throne of solidified nectar, tapped a delicate antenna against a gilded comb. Her brow, usually a smooth expanse of regal calm, was furrowed with a concentration that bordered on exasperation. The latest incident, a spontaneous eruption of pollen that had inadvertently redecorated the entire Royal Jelly preparation chamber in a rather fetching shade of ochre, had been the final straw. Barnaby, bless his pollen-addled heart, was proving to be less of a worker bee and more of a one-bee demolition crew.

"Barnaby," her voice, though musical, carried the weight of a thousand bee-years of leadership, resonating through the chambers. A ripple of anticipation, tinged with nervous giggles from the younger drones, swept through the assembled court. Barnaby, who had been trying to discreetly blend into a particularly fluffy patch of dandelion fluff near the entrance, suddenly found himself the sole focus of every compound eye in the vicinity. He straightened his tiny vest, a nervous twitch tickling his proboscis.

"Your Majesty," he chirped, his voice a little higher than he intended. He braced himself, expecting another lecture on the proper application of wing-power for pollen collection, or perhaps a stern reminder about the sanctity of the Royal Jelly.
