A New Respect
The hive celebrates Barnaby. No longer the laughingstock, he's hailed as a hero. Even Bartholomew offers a grudging, mumbled apology for his past behavior.
The hum of the hive was different today. It wasn’t the usual frantic thrum of busy bees, nor the low murmur of discontent that had settled over them in recent weeks. This was a melody of pure, unadulterated joy, a symphony of buzzing relief that vibrated through every hexagonal cell. Barnaby, still a little sticky with the precious, hypoallergenic nectar, found himself blinking in the sudden spotlight. He’d expected a few nods, perhaps a polite pat on the back. He hadn’t expected *this*.
The Great Hall, usually a functional space for communal meals and important pronouncements, had been transformed. Wildflowers, freshly gathered (and thankfully, not pollen-laden, thanks to Barnaby’s diligent, albeit messy, efforts), adorned the walls. Sunlight streamed through the entrance, catching the dust motes dancing like tiny, golden fairies. And at the center of it all, a raised platform had been constructed, upon which Barnaby found himself perched, looking utterly bewildered.
Queen Beatrice, radiant in her regal bearing, stood beside him. Her normally stern expression was softened by a genuine smile, a sight that made Barnaby’s antennae twitch with a nervous sort of delight. “My dear bees,” she announced, her voice ringing with authority, yet carrying a warmth that embraced every single drone and worker alike. “Today, we celebrate not just the return of our nectar supply, but the courage, the resilience, and the… unique talents of one of our own!”
