Barnaby hovered, his tiny bee heart thrumming a frantic, excited rhythm against his ribs. Before him, bathed in the ethereal glow of the Whispering Peaks’ hidden sun, bloomed the most peculiar flower he had ever encountered. It was a soft, velvety purple, its petals unfurling like the gentle sigh of a sleeping giant. And the scent… oh, the scent! It was a delicate, sweet perfume, utterly devoid of the ticklish, sneezy essence that usually sent him into a pollen-induced frenzy. This was it. The Hypo-Allergenic Bloom. The one Elder Bee Elara had described with such hushed reverence.

He extended a hesitant proboscis, dipping it into the heart of the flower. A minuscule droplet of nectar clung to the tip, shimmering like a captured star. He drew it in, and instead of the familiar, impending sneeze, a wave of pure, unadulterated sweetness washed over his senses. It was like tasting sunshine, like drinking laughter, like the softest whisper of approval from the universe. He took another sip, and another, his pollen sacs gradually swelling with the precious, golden liquid. Each drop felt like a victory, a defiant ‘no’ to the allergy that had dictated so much of his life.

He worked with a focus he’d never thought himself capable of. The usual frantic energy, the clumsy flailing, the involuntary bursts of pollen that had defined his every foraging mission, were absent. Here, in this secluded sanctuary, he was calm. He was precise. He was… a bee. A proper, nectar-collecting bee. He imagined the Queen’s delighted hum, the impressed buzz of the hive, the stunned silence of Bartholomew. A small, triumphant grin spread across his bee face.
