Chapter 14
Bartholomew's Betrayal
Bartholomew appears, ready to sabotage Barnaby. He tries to push Barnaby off the ledge, but his own arrogance leads to him stumbling.
Bartholomew, a creature of pure, unadulterated smugness, hovered at the edge of the precipice, his wings a blur of smug self-satisfaction. Below him, a dizzying drop yawned, a chasm of wind and whistling air that would make any sensible bee’s antennae quiver. But Barnaby, bless his pollen-plagued heart, was not entirely sensible. He was, however, currently quite focused on the delicate, shimmering petals of the Hypo-Allergenic Bloom. It pulsed with a faint, ethereal light, a beacon of hope in this desolate, wind-whipped landscape.
"Well, well, well," Bartholomew drawled, his voice dripping with the kind of condescension usually reserved for particularly dusty cobwebs. "Look who it is. Barnaby the Bumble-Sneeze, attempting to play hero. Adorable, really. Are you sure you don't need a bib, little fellow? Wouldn't want you to get any of that… *precious* nectar on your fuzzy little chin."
Barnaby’s antennae twitched, not with annoyance, but with a strange, burgeoning confidence. He was so close. The Bloom was within reach, its sweet, clean scent a balm to his perpetually irritated sinuses. "Go away, Bartholomew," he said, his voice surprisingly steady. "I'm busy."
