The wind, a boisterous, invisible giant, tugged at Barnaby’s wings with playful, albeit rough, hands. He clung to the jagged cliff face, his tiny bee legs scrabbling for purchase on the sheer, grey rock. Below, the Whispering Peaks lived up to their name, their stony throats exhaling a constant, mournful sigh that seemed to echo the emptiness in the hive’s nectar stores. Above, the sky was a vast, indifferent canvas of pale blue, occasionally streaked with the hurried brushstrokes of clouds. Barnaby, however, wasn’t paying much attention to the scenery. His focus was singular, his antennae quivering with a mixture of anticipation and sheer, unadulterated terror. He was on the hunt for the Hypo-Allergenic Bloom, the legend whispered by Elder Bee Elara, the last hope for a hive slowly starving for sweetness.

He’d followed Elara’s cryptic directions to this desolate corner of the world, a place where even the hardiest of mosses seemed to shrink away from the relentless gale. “Look for the place where the wind sings its loneliest song,” she’d advised, her voice a soft rustle of ancient knowledge. Barnaby, whose own internal soundtrack was usually a symphony of sniffles and wheezes, felt a pang of sympathy for the wind. He knew a thing or two about loneliness.

His gaze scanned the rock face, a dizzying expanse of grey. He’d already navigated treacherous gusts that threatened to send him tumbling into the abyss, his heart thrumming against his ribs like a trapped moth. He’d narrowly avoided a territorial eagle, its shadow a terrifying omen, and had to suppress a sneeze that would have surely sent a cloud of his own unfortunate dander into the air, potentially attracting unwanted attention. Bartholomew, he knew, would have relished such a spectacle, broadcasting it across the hive with glee. But Barnaby was determined. This time, the chaos would be for a good cause.
