Chapter 4

Beyond the First Week: Lessons in Adaptation

After seven days in the field, the fullerene filter prototype endures mixed real-world results. Lena analyzes usage logs and sensor data, revealing early fouling and ergonomic flaws. Marcus pushes for user-centered redesign while advocating for a wider pilot, and Dr. Thorne grapples with balancing theoretical ideals versus on-the-ground adaptation. The chapter ends with plans for a hybrid revision cycle and the promise of a new field visit.

What does a week of relentless use reveal about a new technology? After seven days stationed at the village pump, the fullerene filter had processed hundreds of buckets—its clear water pooling in jerrycans and metal pots dotted around the communal square. Each morning, Emeka’s logbook showed plenty of use, but also a constellation of small issues: a persistent film of organic residue in the inlet mesh, a gradual increase in filter resistance, and a chorus of comments from users about the difficulty of reseating the modular rings in muddy conditions.

Lena started her Monday by compiling these field notes with the live telemetry Dr. Thorne had captured. The drop in flow rate—minor at first—had accelerated by day six. Lena recognized the signature of biofouling, the bane of every membrane in water treatment. The surface passivation they’d modeled in the lab, intended to repel organic buildup, was working, but not completely. The regional water’s heavy organic load was more challenging than predicted.

Practical adaptation came first. Lena drafted a new maintenance guideline for Emeka: initiate a daily backflush using a spare bucket to rinse the membrane in reverse. If the water was especially cloudy, she suggested doubling the frequency. She knew these steps added work for users, but as a fallback, explained how to identify the early warning signs of clogging—slow flow, leaks at the ring joints—and how to swap in the spare membranes supplied. She relayed her findings to Dr. Thorne, who was visibly frustrated on their video call.
