The scent of yeast and sugar, usually a comforting balm, felt suffocating. Elara had barricaded herself behind the familiar warmth of her bakery, Miga y Miel, for three long days. The rain had stopped, but a persistent drizzle seemed to have settled in her soul, mirroring the dampness that had clung to the orchard’s neglected branches. Each loaf she shaped, each pastry she filled, felt like a hollow imitation of the joy they once held. Her hands, usually steady and sure, fumbled with the dough, her mind a tangled mess of hurt and confusion. Liam. The boy with earth on his hands, the one who had coaxed life back into the dying trees, the one who had kissed her with the sweetness of sugar and the promise of a future, had betrayed her. The words Don Rogelio had spoken echoed in the quiet corners of the shop: "Este huerto ya estaba vendido." This orchard was already sold. And then, the devastating confirmation: "Soy yo." It's me. Liam, the one person she had begun to trust, had been the buyer. The weight of that realization had crushed her, sending her fleeing back to the only sanctuary she knew, her bakery, leaving the orchard and Liam behind like wilting leaves. She’d pulled the shutters down, both literally and figuratively, on the possibility of happiness.

Elara, bleary-eyed from a restless night, unlocked the bakery door, bracing herself for the familiar routine. But something was different. Resting on the worn wooden step, nestled beside a brimming bucket of flour, was a woven basket. It wasn’t just any basket; it was a vessel overflowing with the most exquisite strawberries Elara had ever seen. They were plump, impossibly red, and gleamed with a dewy freshness that spoke of careful tending. Each one was a perfect miniature heart, radiating a vibrant sweetness that seemed to promise sunshine. And tucked beneath a cluster of ruby-red jewels was a folded piece of paper.
