Don Rogelio returns, this time to discuss the now-rescinded sale. The legalities are complex, but Liam's commitment to Elara and the orchard solidifies his intentions.
The air in the bakery, usually thick with the comforting embrace of yeast and sugar, felt suddenly thin, brittle. Elara stood behind the counter, her hands still dusted with flour from shaping the morning’s loaves, her gaze fixed on the street outside. A familiar, dark car had pulled up, and Don Rogelio, the man from the bank, was stepping out. His presence always carried the weight of unopened bills and anxieties Elara tried so hard to knead away. She’d hoped the issue with the orchard sale, the one Liam had so unexpectedly resolved, was truly behind them. But the tightening in her chest told her otherwise.
Liam had been a whirlwind of quiet reassurance after the storm of Don Rogelio’s initial revelation. He’d gone to the bank himself, his broad shoulders seeming to absorb the worry that had threatened to engulf Elara. He’d spoken of contracts, of rescission, of his family’s long-standing desire for those particular acres, and, most importantly, of his own unwavering decision to forfeit that dream for something far more precious. He’d emerged from the bank, his face etched with a weariness that mirrored her own, but his eyes held a new, steady light. He’d told her, his voice low and earnest, that the sale was null and void. The orchard was hers, unequivocally. And he wanted, no, needed, to cultivate it with her.
She’d clung to him then, the scent of soil and honest sweat a balm to her frayed nerves. The whispered promise of a future, of shared sunsets and ripening fruit, had begun to blossom in the space Liam had carved out in her heart. But the legalities of land, of debts and promises, were a tangled vine, and Elara had learned that even the sweetest fruit could hide a bitter seed.
