The air in Sarah's small apartment hummed with a comfort Renee hadn't realized she was starving for. It was the scent of old books and cinnamon, a stark contrast to the sterile, perfumed emptiness of her own home with Jesse. Sarah, bless her warm, perceptive soul, had simply held her, a silent, solid presence, until the tremors subsided. Now, they sat across from each other at a worn kitchen table, mugs of steaming tea cradled in their hands. The late afternoon sun slanted through the window, painting stripes of light across the linoleum floor, a gentle interruption to the hushed intensity of their conversation.

"He… he just keeps finding new ways," Renee began, her voice a fragile thread pulled taut. She traced the rim of her mug, her gaze fixed on the swirling amber liquid within. "It's like he has a sixth sense for what will unravel me the most. The little things, Sarah. They’re the ones that burrow in. The way he dismisses my thoughts, makes me question my own memory. He twists everything. If I’m upset, it’s because I’m being irrational. If I’m quiet, I’m sulking. There’s no winning."

Sarah’s eyes, kind and steady, never left Renee's face. There was no judgment there, only a deep well of understanding that felt like a balm to Renee’s raw nerves. "And you said you saw him today… with that man at the café?"
