The musty air of the forgotten study clung to me like a shroud, thick with the scent of decaying paper and the ghosts of secrets long buried. Elias Thorne’s words, whispered in that sterile, echoing corridor, replayed in my mind, each syllable a hammer blow against the foundation of my understanding. “Your lineage, Vance, is more entangled than you know.” I’d dismissed it then, a desperate attempt to throw me off balance, a tactic as transparent as the cracked glass of the window panes above. The document lay open on the heavy oak desk, its brittle pages yellowed with age, the ink faded but still legible. It was a personal journal, penned in a spidery, elegant hand that I recognized with a jolt that sent a tremor through my very bones. My grandfather’s hand. My great-great-grandfather. The man who had signed the very legislation that had supposedly ushered in an era of unprecedented transparency. The irony was so sharp, so cruel, it stole my breath. I wasn't just an outsider chasing shadows; I was a descendant of the very architects of the deception.
