The stale air of the White House basement clung to me like a shroud, a damp, musty testament to secrets buried deep. I’d been so close, so agonizingly close, to the heart of it all. The vault door, a hulking slab of steel, had finally yielded to my persistent efforts, revealing not just dusty files, but the chilling architecture of a century-long lie. President Reed’s personal archives, meant to be a sanctuary of transparency, had become a tomb for truth. And it was here, surrounded by the ghosts of compromised presidencies, that I heard the metallic click of a lock behind me.

My blood ran cold. I hadn't heard anyone descend. No footsteps, no hushed whispers. Just that single, definitive sound. My hand instinctively went to the worn leather satchel slung across my chest, the one containing the handful of documents I’d managed to copy – the ones that hinted at a coordinated effort to rewrite history, to curate a past that served a select few.

“Mr. Vance,” a voice, smooth as aged whiskey and just as dangerous, echoed from the shadows. Elias Thorne. Of course. The Archivists didn’t leave loose ends, and I was rapidly becoming the loosest of ends.
