The ink on the page was faded, a ghost of a once-vibrant declaration, but the words themselves clawed at my mind. “*The Serpent’s Coil… beneath the Meridian’s Eye… the Fourth Seal broken…*” Fragmented, maddeningly cryptic, like whispers from a dying man. Dr. Aris Thorne, my reluctant informant, had been maddeningly vague, his voice a gravelly whisper over a scrambled line. “They know you’re close, Hugo. Too close. Thorne… he’s not playing games anymore. You need to find… the nexus. Before they bury it deeper than the dead.”

The nexus. The Serpent’s Coil. The Meridian’s Eye. What did it all mean? My cramped apartment, usually a sanctuary of dusty tomes and overflowing coffee cups, now felt like a trap. The usual hum of the city outside seemed muted, replaced by an imagined scuttling in the walls, the rustle of unseen pages being shredded. The Archivists. Elias Thorne’s organization, a phantom limb of the government, dedicated to pruning inconvenient truths from the national garden. They had been subtle, at first. A misplaced file, a ‘misunderstanding’ about access, a dismissive academic critique of my early findings. Now, their methods were escalating. The paper felt impossibly thin, like it could disintegrate if I breathed on it too hard. The script was a mix of formal presidential decree and frantic, almost illegible scribbles in the margins. It spoke of a clandestine operation, a “necessary deception” to secure the nation’s future, initiated decades ago. The names were redacted, the dates blurred, but the underlying tone was chillingly clear: a monumental lie, woven into the fabric of American history.
