The stale air of the safe house clung to me like a second skin, thick with the scent of cheap coffee and desperation. Outside, the city hummed its oblivious tune, a symphony of normalcy I’d once taken for granted. Now, it sounded like a taunt. Every siren, every distant laugh, was a reminder of the life I’d traded for this relentless pursuit. They called it the “price of truth.” I was beginning to think it was the price of madness.
My phone buzzed on the scarred wooden table, its screen a stark white rectangle in the dim room. It was Aris. His messages were always terse, coded, like whispers from a ghost. ‘*The wind shifts. They’re hunting near the old park. Be invisible.*’ Simple. Effective. And utterly terrifying. Invisible. How could I be invisible when my face was plastered across every news feed, a caricature of a conspiracy theorist, a madman who dared to tear down the carefully constructed edifice of American history?
The initial firestorm had been exhilarating, a surge of righteous fury as the first leaks hit the global consciousness. The world re-wrote itself, or rather, it began to remember what it had been forced to forget. But the exhilaration had curdled, replaced by a gnawing dread. The Archivists, under Thorne’s iron fist, were a hydra, and for every head I lopped off, two more seemed to sprout. They were everywhere, their influence a suffocating blanket over every institution, every media outlet.
