Dr. Aris Thorne, inspired by Hugo's courage, decides to fully commit. He begins to gather evidence from within The Archivists' ranks, providing Hugo with vital intelligence for his next move.
The stale air of the anonymous motel room was beginning to feel like a second skin. Days bled into nights, marked only by the flickering neon sign outside and the gnawing anxiety in my gut. Elias Thorne and his Archivists were a hydra, and every time I lopped off a head, two more seemed to sprout. I’d managed to leak enough to set the world on fire, to force a global reckoning with the carefully constructed facade of presidential history, but it felt like a single, desperate shot fired into an oncoming army. I was a fugitive, hunted, and the truth, though out there, was still a fragile seedling struggling to break through concrete.
Then, a crackle from the burner phone. A coded message, familiar yet jarringly out of place. Dr. Aris Thorne. The disillusioned Archivist. For weeks, his communications had been sparse, cryptic warnings veiled in academic jargon. Now, the tone had shifted. There was an urgency, a steel I hadn't heard before.
“Hugo,” the synthesized voice, blessedly devoid of emotion, rasped. “The wind has shifted. The rot runs deeper than even you imagined, but perhaps… perhaps it can be excised.”
