Chapter 12
Fugitive's Resolve
Now a fugitive, Hugo is hunted by The Archivists and distrusted by many. Despite the danger, he vows to continue his fight, seeking the complete, unvarnished truth for future generations.
The siren’s wail, a banshee’s cry, was the soundtrack to my new existence. It was a constant, a thrumming beneath the skin, a reminder that the walls were closing in. Every shadow held a potential threat, every passing car a possible pursuer. The Archivists. The name itself was a chilling whisper, a phantom hand reaching out to snuff out the flickering flame of truth I’d managed to ignite. They called me a traitor, a destabilizer, a purveyor of dangerous lies. The media, once my reluctant ally, now painted me as a deranged conspiracy theorist, a danger to national security. President Reed, the woman I’d desperately tried to warn, had publicly denounced me, her words echoing the carefully crafted narrative spun by Thorne and his ilk. It was a bitter pill to swallow, watching the world recoil from the very revelations I’d risked everything to expose.
My old life, the quiet hum of libraries, the comforting scent of aged paper, felt like a distant dream. Now, my world was one of anonymous diners, flickering neon signs, and the constant, gnawing paranoia that came with being a ghost in my own country. I moved like a wraith, changing my appearance with cheap disguises and even cheaper motel rooms, always looking over my shoulder, always listening for the tell-tale click of a heel, the murmur of a hushed conversation that might be about me.
Dr. Thorne’s cryptic warnings had been chillingly accurate. “They don’t just suppress the truth, Hugo,” he’d hissed during our last clandestine meeting, his eyes darting nervously, “they erase it. And anyone who tries to remember.” He’d slipped me a small, data-encrypted drive, a final act of penance, he’d called it. “There’s more,” he’d whispered, his voice raspy with a fear I now understood intimately, “more than you found in the vault. The foundation of it all. But it’s guarded. Heavily.” He’d vanished into the night, leaving me with a fresh wave of dread and a sliver of hope. More. The Archivists had buried even deeper than I’d imagined.
