Chapter 7
Silas's Return
Thorne seeks help from his former colleague, Silas Croft. Silas, initially skeptical, is drawn into the danger, his own latent perceptual anomalies hinting at a deeper connection to dimensional shifts.
The persistent hum of the refrigerator was usually a comforting drone in Aris Thorne’s meticulously ordered universe, a low thrum against the silent symphony of his thoughts. But tonight, it felt like a frantic, trapped insect, mirroring the disquiet that had settled deep in his bones since his brief, terrifying foray into the fourth dimension. The numbers, the shaded squares, the impossible geometry – they were no longer just an abstract puzzle. They were a doorway, and the chill that seeped from it was far more profound than any draft from his antique window frames. He needed a tether, a familiar anchor in the swirling chaos that threatened to consume his carefully constructed solitude.
Silas. The name surfaced like a forgotten buoy in a stormy sea. Silas Croft. His former colleague, the pragmatist, the man who could ground Aris’s flights of fancy with a well-placed anecdote about faulty wiring or a particularly stubborn equation. But now, the impossible was knocking, and Silas was the only one Aris could think of who might understand, or at least, not dismiss him outright.
The drive across town was a blur of streetlights and anxious thoughts. Aris’s hands, usually steady on the steering wheel, trembled slightly. He replayed the encounter with Elara Vance’s agents in his mind – the cold efficiency, the unnerving knowledge they seemed to possess. They knew about him, about the cipher. They were hunting him. And he, a man who preferred the company of theorems to people, was suddenly at the center of a very real, very dangerous game.
