The air in Dr. Aris Thorne’s study, usually thick with the comforting scent of old paper and brewing tea, now hummed with a nervous energy. Outside, the city lights blurred into streaks of neon as rain lashed against the reinforced windows, each drop a tiny, insistent drumbeat against the silence. Thorne hunched over his desk, his brow furrowed in concentration, the faint glow of his monitor reflecting in his intense gaze. The cipher, a sprawling tapestry of numbers and shaded squares, seemed to pulse with a life of its own, a silent challenge that had consumed him for weeks. He’d traced connections, found patterns, and even dared to imagine the impossible – a glimpse, however fleeting, into another reality. But the deeper he delved, the more the enigma tightened its grip, revealing layers of complexity that both thrilled and terrified him.
A sudden, sharp rapping at the study door jolted him from his reverie. Silas. Thorne’s heart gave a familiar lurch of apprehension. Silas, his former colleague, a man of solid ground and practical solutions, had been drawn back into Thorne’s increasingly abstract world by the encroaching shadows. Shadows that now had a name, a face, and a chillingly calm voice.
“Aris? Are you alright in there?” Silas’s voice was muffled by the thick oak.
