The air in the forest grew heavy, not with the comforting scent of damp earth and pine, but with a cloying sweetness that felt unnatural, like overripe fruit left too long in the sun. Branden found himself walking on a path that seemed to shimmer, the trees on either side blurring into an indistinct haze.
