The air grew heavy, thick with the scent of damp earth and something ancient, something that hummed with a power Branden had only ever felt in the deepest caverns of his own spirit. Sunlight, once a dappled caress through the canopy, now struggled to penetrate the dense foliage, casting long, distorted shadows that danced like specters. He pressed onward, his hand instinctively resting on the hilt of his sword, the familiar weight a small comfort in the growing unease. The blight he'd witnessed earlier, a creeping rot that leached the color from leaves and silenced the birdsong, seemed to deepen with every step.

He found himself in a clearing, unlike any he had seen before. The trees here were colossal, their bark gnarled and wise, their branches reaching towards the shadowed sky like pleading arms. In the center of the clearing, perched on a moss-covered stone that seemed to pulse with a faint, inner light, sat an owl. But this was no ordinary owl. Its plumage was the color of a moonless night, shot through with streaks of silver that shimmered even in the dim light. Its eyes, vast and golden, fixed upon Branden with an unnerving intensity. They held a depth of knowledge that spoke of ages, of secrets whispered between stars and earth.

Branden stopped, his breath catching in his throat. He was accustomed to facing armies, to the clash of steel and the roar of men, but this was different. This was a presence that resonated with the very soul of the forest, a being of immense power and quiet authority. He felt a prickle of apprehension, the warrior’s instinct to assess and defend warring with a strange sense of awe.
