The air in the heart of the Whispering Woods had grown heavy, thick with an unspoken dread that clung to Branden like a shroud. Before him loomed the Obsidian Grove, a place of ancient power now twisted into a monument of despair. Twisted, skeletal trees clawed at a sky the color of bruised plums, and the very ground seemed to bleed a sickly, dark ichor. This was where the artifact lay, and this was where he had to face the corrupted guardian.

He drew his sword, the familiar weight a small comfort in the face of the overwhelming darkness. His once-proud antlers were gnarled and broken, dripping with the same dark ichor that stained the ground. His eyes, once pools of wisdom, burned with a malevolent, emerald fire. His massive frame, clad in armor that seemed to be woven from solidified shadow, radiated an aura of pure, unadulterated malice.
