The scent of carnations, a delicate, spicy sweetness, was usually one Lillian found comforting. They were hardy flowers, resilient in their own way, unfurling their ruffled petals with a quiet tenacity. Today, however, the familiar fragrance felt heavy, a cloying sweetness that seemed to cling to the air, mirroring the unease that had settled deep in her bones. Marcus Thorne’s return had been like a sudden frost, chilling the warmth she’d so carefully cultivated in her little corner of the world.

He’d reappeared at the farmer’s market last Saturday, a phantom from a past she’d fought so hard to outrun. He’d approached her stall with that practiced, easy smile, the one that had disarmed her years ago, the one that now sent a shiver of dread down her spine. He’d complimented her new line of perfumes, his eyes, sharp and assessing, lingering on her face. “You’ve really outdone yourself, Lil,” he’d said, his voice a low purr that no longer held any warmth for her. “Such a talent. It’s a shame the world doesn’t appreciate it as much as it should.”
