The air, once sweet with the scent of honeysuckle and the murmur of contented living, now held a different tang. It was the sharp, metallic taste of consequence, the silent echo of a choice made not in the heat of battle, but in the cool, stark chamber of the soul. The world outside, oblivious to the seismic shift within our walls, continued its indifferent spin. “As well as can be, my son,” I replied, my voice a little rougher than I intended. I cleared my throat, forcing a warmth I hoped would bridge the growing chasm. “Come, sit with me.”
