The hum of the engine was a low thrum beneath the worn upholstery of Rain’s battered sedan, a stark contrast to the frantic cacophony that had exploded just hours before. Outside, the streetlights smeared into elongated streaks of gold against the inky blackness of the night, a familiar urban canvas that now felt alien, charged with an unseen menace. I huddled in the back seat, the lingering phantom chill of the cafeteria’s unnatural darkness still prickling my skin. Kelly sat beside me, her hand a comforting weight on my knee, her usual bubbly demeanor subdued, replaced by a quiet watchfulness. Across from us, Rain’s profile was sharp and focused, his gaze fixed on the road, while Jessica, ever the pragmatist, was meticulously cleaning something that looked suspiciously like a silver dagger. Jace, a coiled spring of restless energy, was drumming his fingers on the dashboard, his jaw tight. It was Star, however, who occupied the passenger seat, his presence a gentle balm in the tense silence.
He turned his head, his smile soft, illuminating his face with a subtle, inner luminescence. "It's a lot to take in, I know," he said, his voice a low, melodious cadence. "The world you thought you knew has just tilted on its axis."
I managed a weak nod, the words catching in my throat. "It was… unreal. Like a nightmare."
