The air in the van was thick with a silence that felt heavier than any sound. Outside, the world blurred past in a kaleidoscope of muted greens and greys, the remnants of a normal afternoon now feeling like a distant dream. My heart still hammered a frantic rhythm against my ribs, a persistent echo of the terror that had gripped me just hours ago. Beside me, Kelly’s hand was a warm, steady presence on my knee, a silent anchor in the swirling chaos of my thoughts. Rain sat in the passenger seat, his profile sharp and unreadable against the fading light, while Jace, Star, and Jessica occupied the back with us, a formidable, if unexpected, constellation of protectors.
We’d been driving for what felt like an eternity, the initial adrenaline of escaping the cafeteria giving way to a gnawing uncertainty. Rain had spoken little, his responses to my tentative questions brief, his gaze often fixed on the road ahead as if searching for something unseen. He’d explained that we were heading to a place of safety, a sanctuary, but the word itself felt inadequate, a flimsy shield against the encroaching darkness.
"Are we almost there?" Kelly finally broke the quiet, her voice a little strained.
