Whispers of the Shadow
Our journey begins. Rain shares fragmented warnings about Noctis, the Shadow King, and its hunger for something within me. Kelly reassures me, her loyalty a comforting presence amidst the unease.
The roar of the departing patrol car faded, leaving behind an unnerving silence that seemed to press in on the edges of my hearing. The flashing blue and red lights had painted the shattered cafeteria windows with a frantic, fleeting glow, and now, only the dim, emergency exit signs cast long, distorted shadows across the debris-strewn floor. Kelly’s hand was a warm, steady weight on my arm, her grip tightening almost imperceptibly as if anchoring me to reality. Rain stood a few feet away, his ocean-blue eyes scanning the street, a posture of coiled tension that spoke of a vigilance far beyond what the average teenager possessed. Jessica, ever the pragmatist, was already gathering some of the scattered, miraculously intact textbooks, her brow furrowed in concentration. Jace and Star, their earlier ferocity now softened into a quiet watchfulness, stood guard near the gaping doorway, their gazes sweeping the deserted street.
“They’re gone,” Rain stated, his voice low, devoid of triumph. It was a simple observation, yet it carried the weight of a thousand unspoken concerns.
“Yeah, well, they probably think we’re all just a bunch of dramatic high schoolers who pulled a prank,” Jace grumbled, kicking a stray piece of linoleum. “Can’t say I blame them. This whole thing is pretty… unbelievable.”
