The air in the cafeteria, moments before thick with the cacophony of teenage life, now hung heavy with the acrid tang of fear and ozone. My heart hammered against my ribs, a frantic drummer against the sudden, suffocating silence. The shadow figure, a silhouette carved from pure darkness, remained a fixed point on the stage, its gaze, though unseen, was a palpable weight that pressed down on me. It had *seen* me. And in that chilling recognition, the nightmare had truly begun.

Then, the impossible happened. The cafeteria doors, usually a gateway to freedom, burst inward with a splintering crack. A whirlwind of motion, a blur of dark hair and eyes the color of a stormy sea, swept into the chaos. Rain. He was followed by three others, their movements sharp, decisive, already transforming the frozen terror of the room into a desperate scramble for survival.

Kelly, my best friend, was right beside me, her hand a vise grip on my arm. Her eyes, usually sparkling with mischief, were wide with a fear that mirrored my own, yet beneath it, a spark of defiance flickered. "Sarah, we have to move!" she urged, her voice strained but firm.
