The air in the gym was thick with the metallic tang of fear and the lingering scent of ozone. Rain and his companions had managed to usher us all in, the heavy double doors now sealed, a flimsy barrier against the encroaching darkness. My heart hammered a frantic rhythm against my ribs, each beat echoing the chaos that had just unfolded. Kelly, bless her, was a solid, comforting presence beside me, her hand a steady anchor on my arm.

“You okay, Sarah?” her voice was a low murmur, barely audible above the ragged breaths of the other students huddled together, their faces pale and etched with disbelief.

I could only nod, my throat too tight to form words. My gaze kept drifting back to the gym doors, half-expecting the shadowy figures to splinter through them. But the doors held, and the immediate threat seemed to have receded, pushed back by Rain’s determined stand.
