Rain's Confession

Rain admits the true depth of Noctis's threat and his personal stake in stopping it. He reveals his fear for my safety and the burden of his knowledge.

The air in the battered minivan was thick with a silence that felt heavier than the lingering scent of stale french fries and fear. Outside, the familiar suburban landscape blurred into an impressionist smear of greens and grays as we sped away from the school, away from the chaos, away from everything I’d ever known. Kelly, usually a chatterbox, sat beside me, her knuckles white where she gripped the worn upholstery, her eyes fixed on the passing trees as if searching for answers in their rustling leaves. Across from us, Jessica, Jace, and Star were a study in contained tension. Jace kept his gaze locked on the road ahead, his jaw tight, while Star, usually so outwardly calm, fidgeted with a loose thread on his jacket.

And then there was Rain. He drove with an unnerving stillness, his profile sharp and defined against the dim interior light. His ocean-blue eyes, so piercing and reassuring when they’d first met mine, now held a depth of weariness that seemed to swallow the light. Every now and then, his gaze would flick to the rearview mirror, a silent, instinctive check that sent a fresh wave of unease through me.

We hadn’t spoken much since leaving the school grounds. The adrenaline had worn off, leaving behind a hollow ache and a gnawing uncertainty. What had just happened? Who were these people? And why did the shadow figure, Noctis, want *me*? The questions swirled in my mind, a tangled mess I couldn’t begin to unravel.
