The air in the gym was thick with the acrid scent of ozone and the metallic tang of fear. Outside, the storm raged, a symphony of wind and rain that mirrored the tempest brewing within the sanctuary of the school. Rain had just finished explaining the urgency of our situation, his voice a low rumble that somehow cut through the residual panic. “Noctis won’t stop,” he’d said, his ocean-blue eyes locking with mine, a plea and a warning intertwined. “He knows you’re here. He’ll keep coming.”

I nodded, my throat tight. The image of the shadow figure, its formless hunger focused solely on me, was seared into my mind. Beside me, Kelly squeezed my arm, her usual cheerful demeanor replaced by a grim determination. Jessica, ever the pragmatist, was already gathering stray backpacks and water bottles, her brow furrowed in concentration. Jace stood near the exit, a coiled spring of restless energy, his gaze sweeping the perimeter. Star, his usual calm presence radiating a quiet strength, was tending to a few students who’d sustained minor scrapes during the chaos.

“We need to move,” Rain stated, his voice firm. “The safe house isn’t far, but the journey will be… complicated.” He glanced at Jace and Star. “You two, stay sharp. Noctis’s minions are still out there, looking for strays.”
