The Lure of Darkness
Noctis attempts to tempt me, preying on my fears and doubts. It whispers promises of power, trying to sever my trust in Rain and the group.
The air in the gym was thick with the lingering scent of ozone and fear, a pungent cocktail that clung to the fluorescent lights like a shroud. Students, huddled together in terrified clusters, whispered and pointed, their eyes darting towards the double doors that had been so violently burst open just moments before. Kelly, her face pale but her jaw set, stayed close, her hand a comforting weight on my arm. Rain, his ocean-blue eyes still scanning the perimeter with an intensity that made my own heart pound, stood a few feet away, his gaze occasionally flicking towards me. Jessica, her knuckles white where she gripped a small, intricate pendant, whispered something to Jace, who nodded, his broad shoulders tense. Star, ever the calm presence, offered a reassuring nod to a group of trembling freshmen.
We were safe, for now. The Shadow King, Noctis, had been driven back, his shadowy tendrils retreating into the oppressive darkness from which they’d emerged. But the victory felt hollow, a temporary reprieve. Rain’s words echoed in my mind: *You’re not safe. Not here. Not anywhere until we can get you to the safe house.*
The gym felt like a cage, a stark contrast to the relative freedom of the cafeteria, even with its terrifying specter. I hugged myself, trying to ward off a chill that had nothing to do with the temperature. The image of the figure on stage, its formless void drawing me in, was seared into my memory. It had looked at me. It had *seen* me. And then, the creatures… they had been sent for *me*.
