Navigating the Umbral Path

The air outside the school was thick with the lingering scent of ozone and fear. Rain had practically dragged me, a bewildered Kelly clinging to my other side, into his beat-up black SUV. The engine sputtered to life, a low rumble that did little to soothe the frantic thrumming in my chest. The other three, Jessica, Jace, and Star, piled into the back, their faces grim in the dim glow of the streetlights. Rain glanced at me in the rearview mirror, his ocean-blue eyes holding a depth of concern that both terrified and strangely comforted me.

"We need to move, Sarah," he said, his voice low and urgent. "Noctis won't stop. He knows you're out."

I nodded, unable to form words. The image of that towering shadow figure, its focus so unnervingly fixed on me, was seared into my mind. The shadowy tendrils that had snaked out from its form, reaching for me, still felt like phantom touches against my skin.
