We huddled together, a motley crew of survivors, the echo of the cafeteria chaos still ringing in our ears. Kelly, bless her loyal heart, was pressed against my side, her grip on my arm a comforting anchor in the swirling uncertainty. Jessica, her usual composed demeanor slightly frayed, was murmuring something under her breath, her fingers tracing unseen patterns in the air. Jace, ever the watchful guardian, stood a little apart, his gaze sweeping the perimeter of the cavernous room, while Star, his bright eyes darting between us, offered small, reassuring smiles.

And then there was Rain. He stood near the makeshift barricade of overturned benches, his silhouette stark against the dim emergency lights. His ocean-blue eyes, which had seemed so piercing and decisive in the chaos, now held a distant, haunted quality. He was talking softly with Jessica, their voices a low murmur that barely cut through the anxious rustling of the students.

“Are you sure we can’t just… go home?” A girl’s voice, thin and reedy, broke the tense silence. “My mom’s going to freak out.”
