The hum of the van was a low thrum against my skin, a stark contrast to the frantic thumping of my own heart. Outside, the world blurred into streaks of grey and green, the familiar landscape of my town now feeling alien, tinged with an unsettling new reality. The air inside the vehicle was thick with a nervous energy, a potent cocktail of fear and determination. Rain sat in the driver’s seat, his profile sharp against the dim interior light, those ocean-blue eyes fixed on the road ahead. Beside me, Kelly’s hand was a comforting weight on my arm, her grip tight, a silent reassurance that I wasn’t alone in this bewildering descent into the unknown.

“Are we… are we going far?” I finally managed to whisper, the words feeling fragile in the charged silence.

Rain glanced at me in the rearview mirror, a flicker of something unreadable in his gaze. “Far enough,” he said, his voice a low rumble. “Far enough to be safe, for now.”
