The First Shadow Test

The hum of the van was a low thrum against my skin, a stark contrast to the frantic thumping of my own heart. Outside, the world blurred into streaks of grey and green, the familiar landscape of my town now feeling alien, tinged with an unsettling new reality. “Are we… are we going far?” I finally managed to whisper, the words feeling fragile in the charged silence.
